Women and Corrections
The purpose of the 2012 Angola Museum Symposium is to highlight the role of women employees and the lives of women offenders and elucidate their contributions to the development of corrections and penology. This year’s symposium will bring to light to the general public the programs and resources presently utilized within the Department of Corrections in Louisiana that deal with women’s issues.
An exhibit depicting the accomplishments of women in Louisiana Corrections and the history of female incarceration at the state penitentiary at Baton Rouge, Angola, and LCIW at St. Gabriel is available for viewing at the Angola Museum.
The symposium is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Chapel of the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. Attendance is free. The symposium will include presentations by professional women in Corrections, documentaries dealing with women and corrections; a presentation of filmed interviews with offenders with a short question and answer period; and a tour of the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW).

Outline of Symposium Events Morning (9:00 am to 11:15 am)
Presentations will be given by correctional personnel providing a historical overview of professional women in corrections, personal accounts of “breaking the glass ceiling,” and the future direction of women in corrections. There will be a round table discussion after the final presentation.
Lunch 11:15 am to 12:15 pm
Lunch will be provided for $5.00 per person and must be paid for in advance through the Angola Museum’s PayPal account.
Afternoon (12:15 pm to 3:00 pm)
The afternoon portion of the symposium will consist of presentations concerning women offenders in Louisiana, filmed interviews of female offenders, and a question and answer period with the offenders.
Tours of the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) will be available.
